Lotte Giants Players Recalled Amid Illegal Gambling Scandal
The Lotte Giants face a challenging start to the season even before play has begun, as four key players have been sent back to Korea following allegations of illegal gambling during their spring training in Taiwan. Among those involved are top players Na Seung-yeop and Ko Seung-min, alongside teammates Kim Dong-hyuk and Kim Se-min.
Players Recalled After Visiting Illegal Gaming Venue
The controversy began when an online post claimed that several Lotte players training in Tainan, Taiwan, had been captured on security cameras at a PC bang, an internet gaming venue. Further investigation revealed that the establishment operated illegally under local law.
Because gambling is prohibited in Taiwan, the players’ actions violated both KBO rules and the team’s internal regulations. The Giants confirmed that the four players would be immediately recalled and that the KBO Clean Baseball Center has been notified to determine disciplinary measures. Serious consequences are expected.
Team Still Pursuing Postseason Baseball
Lotte has missed the playoffs for eight consecutive seasons since 2017. Last year, the team finished with a 66-72-6 record, placing seventh with a .478 win percentage. While they held a 3rd place standing in the first half of the season, a poor second half, including a 12-game losing streak in August, ended any postseason hopes.
The team had hoped to mount another push for the playoffs this year, but the gambling scandal has already overshadowed preparations, creating an unexpected distraction at the start of spring training.
Manager Faces Pressure in Final Contract Year
This season is also critical as it marks the final year of manager Kim Tae-hyung’s contract. The offseason brought no major roster upgrades, leaving the team reliant on internal development. The suspended players were expected to play key roles in stabilizing the lineup, making the timing of the scandal particularly damaging.
Core Players at the Center of Controversy
Na Seung-yeop and Ko Seung-min are central to the situation, alongside Yoon Dong-hee and Hwang Sung-bin, who together formed the core group nicknamed “Yun Na Go Hwang.” Na hit .229 last season with 75 hits, nine home runs, 44 RBIs and a .707 OPS across 105 games. Ko posted a .271 average with 127 hits, four home runs, 45 RBIs and a .700 OPS over 121 games.
These players were expected to be key contributors in 2026, but the gambling incident raises uncertainty about their availability and impact, especially if substantial disciplinary action is imposed.
