Macau Casinos Pledge $15M to Sponsor Grand Prix
Macau Grand Prix is receiving a major financial boost as Macau’s six licensed casino operators have pledged a combined MOP120 million (US$15 million) to support the city’s flagship international motor racing event this November.
The announcement was made during a press conference hosted by the Grand Prix Organizing Committee, highlighting the strong partnership between the gaming industry and Macau’s broader cultural and sporting ambitions.
Unified Support from Six Leading Casino Operators
Each of the six major operators Galaxy Entertainment Group, Melco Resorts & Entertainment, MGM China Holdings, Sands China, SJM Resorts and Wynn Macau will contribute MOP20 million each.
The total cost of hosting the 72nd edition of the Macau Grand Prix is MOP240 million, meaning casino sponsorship will cover half of the event’s budget. Scheduled for 13–16 November, the Grand Prix will feature seven major races, attracting motorsport fans from around the world and boosting the city’s tourism economy.
Boosting Economic Diversification Beyond Gaming
In a joint statement, the Sports Bureau and the Grand Prix Organizing Committee emphasized how the sponsorship aligns with government goals to diversify Macau’s economy. By investing in sports and cultural attractions, the casino sector helps create a more well-rounded tourism experience beyond gaming.
This approach supports Macau’s strategic push to integrate sports tourism as a key pillar of its economic transformation. All six operators have already incorporated non-gaming investment commitments into their business plans as part of their 10-year gaming concession agreements, which took effect in January 2023.
Strengthening Non-Gaming Commitments
Under these agreements, the operators collectively pledged MOP108.7 billion for non-gaming projects. This target was raised by 20% after Macau’s combined casino gross gaming revenue exceeded MOP180 billion in 2023.
The new sponsorship underscores their commitment to supporting major international events like the Macau Grand Prix, reinforcing Macau’s reputation as a diverse entertainment hub that blends world-class racing with luxury hospitality and gaming experiences.
Cementing Macau’s Global Event Legacy
The Macau Grand Prix has long been one of the city’s most prestigious annual events. Beyond the thrill of racing, it fuels significant revenue for hotels, restaurants and retail businesses, drawing international tourists and media attention.
The casino operators’ investment reflects confidence in Macau’s future as a balanced global tourism destination and underscores the critical role of non-gaming initiatives in shaping the city’s next chapter.
