Montevideo Debates Future of Casino Parque Hotel

The fate of Casino Parque ( Hotel a historic, municipally run gaming venue in Montevideo ) is becoming increasingly unstable amid rising political tensions. Following a recent meeting with Camilo Benítez, the city’s Director of Economic Development, opposition leaders renewed demands for the casino’s permanent closure, arguing that the operation has become an untenable financial drain on the capital.

Opposition Pushes for Immediate Shutdown

National Party representatives, led by councilman Juan Ignacio Abdala, said the administration failed to provide convincing explanations regarding the casino’s finances. Abdala reiterated that the party has long stressed the issue, but claimed the government has shown “no urgency” in addressing what he described as an annual structural deficit of nearly 90 million Uruguayan pesos.

He argued that ongoing losses, combined with stalled decision-making, justify an immediate end to the casino’s operations. For the opposition, keeping the venue open under current conditions does not align with responsible public financial management.

City Leadership Favors Shifting Control to National Authorities

Mayor Mario Bergara, however, continues to support transferring the casino’s management to the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), specifically to the Dirección General de Casinos. He believes such a move would bring regulatory alignment and provide greater stability by integrating the venue into the national casino network.

Abdala countered that the transfer discussions appear “stuck,” citing contradictory public statements suggesting different possible timelines, some pointing to later this year, others to next year, or contingent on MEF budget negotiations. He stressed that the issue is not transparency, but a lack of clear progress and defined deadlines.

Casino Administration Attempts to Contain Losses

Meanwhile, Lorena Infante, Director of the Casino Service, noted that internal efforts are underway to streamline operations and reduce the financial burden. She emphasized that despite economic difficulties, the jobs associated with the casino will be safeguarded.

Her remarks indicate that the administration is prioritizing employment stability while evaluating long-term solutions, whether through improved internal management or through transferring oversight to national authorities.

A Broader Debate Over Public Gaming Responsibilities

The dispute surrounding Casino Parque Hotel goes beyond its financial performance. It has prompted deeper questions about the role of municipally operated casinos, the division of responsibilities between local and national governments and the appropriate use of public funds.

As political disagreements intensify, the future of the Casino Parque Hotel remains uncertain. Whether Montevideo opts to close the venue or pursue a management transfer, the controversy signals a pivotal moment for the city’s gaming strategy and public resource management.
