YouTube Tightens Global Rules on Gambling and Game Violence

YouTube is rolling out new global policies from Monday, 17 November, aiming to tighten control over gambling-related content and realistic video game violence to better protect minors. In Brazil, the updates align with regulatory guidance from the Secretaria de Prêmios e Apostas and Conar ad standards, marking a broader push for responsible content.

Expanded Oversight of Online Betting Content
The platform will now restrict videos involving any games of chance whether real money or virtual items like skins, NFTs, or in-game currency if they reference unlicensed gambling sites. The change applies to uploads, livestreams, tutorials and references, reflecting the growing popularity of digital betting models among younger audiences. Social casino content, previously treated leniently due to lack of cash transactions, will now be age-restricted for viewers under 18.

Stricter Guidelines on Violent Gaming
YouTube is also increasing oversight of realistic depictions of human violence in video games. Content with highly graphic or psychologically intense scenes will face restrictions to protect teens. Creators are encouraged to review older videos, which may be reclassified or removed to comply with the new rules.

Cracking Down on Illegal Betting Promotion
Channels linking to or promoting offshore, unregulated betting services will face age restrictions and potential removal for repeated violations. Platforms will act as a frontline in limiting exposure to unlicensed gambling, complementing existing SPA and advertising rules aimed at protecting minors.

Responsibility Beyond Visibility
Experts emphasize that technical measures alone are insufficient. Platforms must enhance responsible gambling features like deposit limits, self-exclusion and behavioral monitoring. Visible risk warnings on all gambling-related content are recommended, similar to those used for alcohol and tobacco, ensuring transparency and early intervention.

Global Trend Toward Safer Digital Spaces
YouTube’s new policies reflect a worldwide shift toward safer online environments. By limiting exposure to illegal gambling and violent game content, the platform aims to protect young users, reinforce compliance with regulatory standards and foster a culture of responsibility among creators and operators.
