FMF Probes Match-Fixing Allegations in Liga Premier MX

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has opened a formal inquiry into suspected match manipulation linked to Liga Premier MX, the third tier of Mexican football, following a complaint alleging improper betting-related conduct involving player Sofía Álvarez Tostado and several others.

As an initial safeguarding step, competition officials have postponed the Liga Premier MX match between Héroes de Zaci FC and Cañoneros FC, originally scheduled for matchday 16. The suspension aims to preserve sporting integrity while the investigation into the alleged irregularities is carried out.

Alleged Betting Influence Under Review

According to documentation associated with the case, Sofía Álvarez Tostado is suspected of proposing financial inducements to individuals within the football ecosystem in an effort to influence the outcome of a match. Authorities are examining whether these actions were connected to illegal betting interests targeting lower-division competitions.

On January 15, the FMF circulated a formal notice to club executives, players and coaching staff across the league, reminding all participants of their obligation to uphold competition regulations and remain vigilant against any conduct that could compromise fair play.

The federation emphasized that cooperation and transparency are essential, particularly in divisions considered more vulnerable to external betting-related pressure.

Player Profile and Public Developments

Álvarez Tostado, 25, has previously played in Liga MX Femenil during the 2022 season and later continued her career in Europe, representing Valencia CF in Spain and Beşiktaş in Turkey. She also secured a league title with AEK Athens in April 2025.

Following the public disclosure of the investigation, the player reportedly deactivated her social media accounts, further intensifying public and media scrutiny surrounding the case.

Club Statements and Preventive Actions

Héroes de Zaci FC confirmed that fewer than five players linked to the club are under investigation. The club stated that the individuals involved may have been subjected to intimidation and extortion attempts by external actors allegedly tied to illegal betting operations, rather than internal club activity.

As a precaution, the affected players have been temporarily separated from team activities while authorities continue their review.

Integrity Concerns in Lower Divisions

The FMF reiterated that clubs and players are legally and ethically required to report any suspicious contact or approaches related to match manipulation. The federation acknowledged that illegal betting continues to pose a growing risk to lower-tier football in Mexico.

The ongoing investigation underscores the importance of sustained oversight and enforcement measures to protect the credibility of domestic football competitions.
