Kangwon Land Draws 147K Visitors During Chuseok Break

Kangwon Land ( the only casino in South Korea that legally welcomes domestic players ) recorded a major upswing in foot traffic during the **** celebrations. From October 3 to October 12, the resort hosted approximately 147,550 local visitors, according to figures released by Kangwon Land Inc. Hotel occupancy across the property averaged 81.4 %, reflecting the strength of the extended holiday period.

Holiday Calendar Boosts Domestic Travel

Chuseok, also called Hangawi, is South Korea’s most important traditional harvest festival. Normally spanning three days, this year’s main celebration fell on October 6, with official holidays running from the 5th to the 7th. But with **** on October 3 and **** On October 9, many Koreans enjoyed a rare week-long holiday window. This extended break triggered a sharp rise in travel across the country with Kangwon Land emerging as one of the most popular destinations.

Although the operator has not shared a year-on-year comparison, the attendance spike suggests strong demand for leisure and entertainment over the national holiday.

Preparing for the Ski Season

Looking ahead, the resort is moving to capture early winter traffic. Kangwon Land Inc. announced plans to launch its ski operations in late November, opening a week earlier than last year to attract seasonal tourists. By expanding its recreational offer beyond gaming, the company aims to keep foot traffic steady year-round.

Financial Results Under Pressure

Even with heavy visitor numbers, Kangwon Land is navigating a difficult financial landscape. In July, the company reported a 62.2 % decline in second-quarter net profit, totaling KRW 60.63 billion (USD 42.67 million). Rising operating expenses outpaced casino revenue, creating new challenges for profitability.

Still, the operator is looking beyond short-term fluctuations. Construction is already underway on a second casino complex, scheduled to open in early 2028. This development is expected to increase gaming capacity, draw more visitors and strengthen the company’s market share.

A One-of-a-Kind Destination

Kangwon Land’s significance in the domestic gambling landscape is unique: it’s the only casino legally open to Korean nationals. Its ability to attract massive crowds during Chuseok highlights its role as a flagship domestic resort, combining gaming, lodging and entertainment.

With well-developed accommodation and leisure facilities, the resort caters to families, couples and solo travelers alike not just gamblers.

Winter Momentum Building

As autumn festivities wind down, the operator is using this momentum to kick-start the winter season. Its ski facilities remain a critical piece of its non-gaming strategy, drawing both locals and tourists seeking seasonal activities.

Through early seasonal openings, strategic expansion and targeted positioning, Kangwon Land is shaping itself into a year-round leisure powerhouse despite rising costs and evolving market conditions.
