Pay4Fun Study Shows 80% Spike in Copa Libertadores Bets

Financial activity on sports betting platforms surged by more than 80% during the decisive stages of the 2025 Copa Libertadores da América, according to a first-of-its-kind study published by Pay4Fun. The analysis focused on transaction behavior surrounding the tournament’s semifinals and final, shedding light on how bettors act before, during and after high-stakes football matches.

Pay4Fun’s findings show a strong concentration of betting-related transactions ahead of kickoff, followed by a steady decline once matches begin. Transaction volumes weaken progressively throughout gameplay and continue to drop after the final whistle, highlighting a clear shift in user activity tied to match timing.

Pre-Match Activity Drives Betting Volumes

One of the study’s key takeaways is the dominance of pre-match financial activity. Deposits and withdrawals peak before games start, indicating that bettors strongly favor placing wagers ahead of decisive moments rather than engaging heavily during live play.

This pattern was especially pronounced during the tournament final between Palmeiras and Flamengo. In that match, transaction volumes prior to kickoff were 71.9% higher than the average recorded during the game itself. The data underscores the importance of anticipation and strategic positioning for bettors during major fixtures.

Once the match got underway, transaction levels dropped sharply. During regular time, financial activity ranged between 1% and 20.7% below average. After the match concluded, the decline became even more evident, with post-match transactions falling by 32.5%.

Semifinals Reflect the Same Trend

Similar transaction dynamics were observed during the semifinals. In the second-leg clash between Palmeiras and Liga Deportiva Universitaria (LDU), pre-kickoff activity exceeded average transaction levels by 83%. However, this momentum faded as the match progressed.

During the first hour of play, transaction volumes were 12.1% below average, before declining further to 25.5% in the second half. Following the final whistle, post-match activity dropped sharply, registering a 45.1% decrease.

Flamengo Fixtures Confirm the Pattern

Matches involving Flamengo produced comparable results. In the club’s away semifinal against Racing Club in Argentina, transaction volumes before kickoff were 69% above average. As seen in other fixtures, activity declined notably once the match ended.

Understanding Bettor Behavior

According to Pay4Fun, the study reinforces a clear behavioral pattern tied to major sporting events. Bettors consistently conduct the majority of their financial transactions before matches begin, rather than during live play. This tendency becomes even more pronounced during high-profile competitions such as the Copa Libertadores.

By examining transaction data, Pay4Fun notes that it is possible to gain deeper insight into how large-scale sporting events influence financial behavior across betting platforms.
