Turkey Suspends 1,024 Players & 149 Referees in Betting Case
Turkish authorities have launched one of the largest anti-corruption operations in the nation’s football history, suspending 1,024 players and 149 referees following a sweeping investigation into illegal betting activities. The crackdown also saw the arrest of Eyupspor chairman Murat Ozkaya, among other officials.
Widespread Integrity Breach
The probe revealed a systemic corruption network affecting multiple tiers of Turkish football. Allegations include referees placing bets on games they officiated and players involved in illicit gambling, prompting temporary suspensions for matches in the third and fourth divisions, though top-tier games continue as scheduled.
High Gambling Involvement Among Referees
The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) disclosed alarming statistics: over 60% of active referees in professional leagues are registered gamblers, with 152 confirmed to have placed bets on matches. Some individuals have engaged in extreme activity, including one referee who reportedly wagered on more than 18,000 games, while 42 others bet on over 1,000 matches each.
Impact on Transfers and Governance
TFF President Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu described the situation as the “worst ethical crisis” in recent memory. The federation has requested a 15-day extension from FIFA for the winter transfer window to accommodate the ongoing investigation, highlighting the disruption caused to normal operations.
Authorities continue to investigate the scope of illegal betting in Turkish football, signaling a decisive stance against corruption and the protection of sporting integrity.
