Turkish Football Hit by Major Betting Scandal

Turkish football is facing unprecedented turmoil as authorities launch the country’s largest-ever probe into match betting. The investigation has already led to the suspension of more than a hundred professional players, with thousands more reportedly under scrutiny.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) confirmed that 25 Süper Lig players and 77 from the second division have received temporary bans ranging from a single day to 45 days. Officials have stressed that these initial sanctions are only the beginning, with additional disciplinary actions expected.

Among the high-profile cases, Galatasaray defender Eren Elmali received a 45-day suspension for placing bets on a match unrelated to his club, dating back roughly five years. Teammate Metehan Baltaci received an identical ban for a similar infraction. Both players acknowledged their actions, emphasizing they could not have influenced the outcomes, yet the federation maintains a strict zero-tolerance approach.

Federation Takes Firm Stance
Under the leadership of President Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu, who took office 16 months ago, the TFF is signaling a hard line against gambling-related misconduct. Haciosmanoglu emphasized that the federation’s mandate is to protect Turkish football from corruption and restore its integrity.

The investigation extends beyond players. Reports indicate that over 150 referees may have engaged in betting, with some operating multiple accounts and placing thousands of wagers over time. Authorities warn that further bans are imminent, signaling continued instability across the sport.

As the probe unfolds, Turkish football faces a prolonged period of scrutiny and enforcement. The federation’s uncompromising approach suggests that the battle against corruption will reshape both professional and officiating tiers, aiming to safeguard the reputation of the country’s top-flight football.
