LOTERJ Increases Social Investments to R$45M
Over the past four years, the State Lottery of Rio de Janeiro (LOTERJ) has significantly expanded its social investment program, increasing funding from R$1.3 million in 2021 to R$45 million by 2025. The organization, linked to the State’s Civil House, oversees lotteries across municipalities and plays a key role in regulating legal gambling and authorizing sports betting operations and online platforms.
LOTERJ positions its mission as more than regulatory enforcement it focuses on turning lottery revenues into meaningful social impact. According to President Hazenclever Lopes Cançado, the institution channels resources to projects that benefit children, adolescents and communities in Rio de Janeiro, promoting responsible gaming and social inclusion.
Approximately 70% of LOTERJ’s net profits are allocated to initiatives supporting vulnerable populations. Notable programs include a partnership with Rio Solidário, which funds early childhood education centers in Jardim Batan, Cidade de Deus and Vila do João, assisting around 600 children. Additionally, LOTERJ fully funds the Lar da Mulher, a shelter providing care, psychological support and educational activities for women and their children affected by domestic violence.
LOTERJ’s efforts have garnered international recognition. In April 2024, the organization was unanimously accepted as a Regular Member of the Ibero-American Corporation of State Lotteries and Gambling (CIBELAE) during a board meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Guided by core values of legality, solidarity, transparency, ethics and credibility, LOTERJ ensures that lottery revenues are efficiently transformed into social, educational, health, sports and cultural projects. Its recent growth demonstrates how responsible management of public funds can drive social development while reinforcing the institution’s position as a model lottery operator both regionally and globally.
