MGM Strengthens Responsible Gaming via Macau University
MGM China is strengthening its commitment to responsible gaming by partnering with the City University of Macau (CityU) to integrate classroom learning with community engagement. The initiative aims to nurture a new generation of student advocates focused on promoting social responsibility within Macau’s gaming sector.
The programme, now in its second year, is expanding MGM’s efforts to embed responsible gaming and financial literacy education on university campuses, reinforcing the operator’s goal of balancing industry growth with social welfare.
Student Ambassadors and Financial Wellness Initiatives
The project combines theoretical learning with practical application. It features a “Responsible Gaming Campus Ambassador Programme” and a “Healthy Financial Management Promotion Design Competition.” Over 30 students from fields including tourism, hospitality and social work joined the ambassador programme, receiving instruction from MGM’s Director of Responsible Gaming, Tina Wong, alongside Pak Kin Pong, Director of the Integrated Services Center at Macao Gaming Industry Employees Home.
New modules in this year’s curriculum focused on correcting gambling misconceptions and preventing gambling disorders, broadening the programme’s educational scope compared with its first iteration. Following the training, student ambassadors organized outreach initiatives such as family financial-planning games, responsible-gaming carnivals and promotional campaigns at popular tourist locations.
Significance for Macau’s Gaming Sector
Macau’s regulated gaming industry recognizes responsible gambling as essential to social and economic stability. Paulo Martins Chan, former Director of the DICJ, has emphasized that operators must actively provide ongoing training to staff to equip them with the knowledge required to uphold these standards.
CityU Vice Rector Ip Kuai Peng highlighted the effectiveness of combining “training plus practice” and “competition plus innovation,” noting that student-led projects have inspired creativity while reinforcing social responsibility. Several of the award-winning initiatives are expected to continue evolving, contributing to Macau’s sustainable development goals.
Building Long-Term Impact
Tina Wong underlined the long-term objectives of the partnership, stressing that the programme empowers students to promote financial wellness and responsible gaming across both campuses and the broader community. She emphasized that collaboration among government, enterprises, schools and community organizations is crucial for establishing a sustainable framework for Macau.
MGM’s model of combining campus-based education with community outreach could serve as a blueprint for other operators. By consistently investing in financial and mental wellness initiatives, the gaming sector may gradually shift public perception from being seen solely as entertainment providers to recognized community partners.
